Town of Orangeville

The Building Code Act, as amended by Bill 124 added many new requirements to the building permit process. The Town of Orangeville found that it needed a solution that would provide checks and balances to ensure it met those requirements. In 2007, it upgraded its operations software system to Direct IT. The benefits of the move to Direct IT were instantaneous. Not only did software solution help the municipality comply with Ministry standards, it increased productivity, managed information more effectively, and improved the flow of information from administrative staff to inspection staff. The permit process was enhanced, permit tracking was improved and, timeline responsibilities were highlighted. Best of all, because Direct IT's solution is far less onerous than the previous process, Town employees now have more time to focus on other areas of municipal business.

"The people at Direct IT are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. They deliver on their promise and the service has been excellent."

Township of Scugog

In 2006, the Township of Scugog turned to Direct IT when it wanted to upgrade several of its software systems. A big reason for the decision: the fact that Direct IT understands municipal business and just how different the public sector is from the private sector. The Township first implemented Service Request Manager – which was well received by staff to assist in handling the approximately 1,200 annual requests managed by the Township. Service Request Manager improves work flow, tracks progress and automates communication regarding a request. In addition, it provides analysis and reporting tools that enable Staff and Council to better understand what citizens call about, the status of their requests and the municipality's performance. Next, Scugog implemented Land Manager, to better manage its building permit process. The application has improved efficiency and has enabled the Township to better comply with the Bill 124 requirements for decision timeframes, tracking BCIN information, and annual reporting.

"We were able to get people up and going quickly. With Service Request Manager, people were operational in one day and with Land Manager people were operational in two days. Once we made the decision to implement, it happened quickly."

Commissioner of Planning & Public Works,
